Matted Dog Grooming
No judgment. No shame. Just compassionate help getting your dog comfortable again.
First: It's Okay. We're Here to Help.
Life happens. Maybe you've been sick, overwhelmed, dealing with a family crisis, or just didn't realize how quickly matting can take over. You're not a bad pet owner — you're here now, looking for help. That's what matters.
We Can Help Your Matted Dog
Matting isn't just a cosmetic problem — it's painful for your dog. Mats pull on the skin, trap moisture and bacteria, hide skin infections, and can even restrict movement. The sooner we address it, the better your dog will feel.
At Fancy Pet Salon, we handle matted dogs with patience and compassion. We'll assess the situation honestly, explain your options, and do what's best for your dog's comfort — not what saves the most coat.
What Happens When You Bring a Matted Dog
Honest Assessment
We'll look at the matting and tell you exactly what we're dealing with — mild, moderate, or severe. No sugarcoating, but no judgment either.
Options Discussion
Depending on severity, we'll discuss whether brushing out is possible or if shaving is the kindest option for your dog.
Comfort-First Grooming
We take our time, take breaks when needed, and prioritize your dog's wellbeing over speed or aesthetics.
The Truth About Matted Coats
Can't you just brush it out?
Sometimes — but often, no. Here's the reality:
- Mild matting: Small tangles that haven't tightened yet can often be worked out with patience, detangling spray, and the right tools. This takes extra time but is usually doable.
- Moderate matting: Larger mats that have tightened may require cutting out individual mats while saving the rest of the coat, resulting in an uneven look until it grows back.
- Severe matting: When mats are close to the skin, covering large areas, or have formed a "pelt" (one solid mat over the body), shaving is the only humane option.
Why We Don't "Demat" Severe Cases
Some groomers will spend hours painfully ripping through severe mats. We won't. Here's why:
- It hurts. Imagine someone pulling your hair for 3+ hours straight.
- It damages skin. Aggressive brushing causes brush burn, irritation, and even bleeding.
- It traumatizes dogs. Many dogs develop lifelong grooming anxiety from painful dematting sessions.
- The coat is already damaged. Severely matted fur is broken and unhealthy — it's better to start fresh.
Shaving a matted dog isn't "giving up" — it's the kindest choice.
What to Expect After a Matted Shave
If we need to shave your dog, here's what you should know:
- They might look different. A shaved Goldendoodle doesn't look like a fluffy Goldendoodle. That's okay — it grows back.
- They'll feel SO much better. Most dogs are visibly happier and more energetic after getting rid of painful mats.
- Skin issues may appear. Mats often hide hot spots, rashes, or sores. We may uncover problems that need vet attention.
- They may be cold. Consider a sweater or coat until the fur grows back, especially in cooler weather.
- Coat texture may change. Sometimes coats grow back slightly different in color or texture. This is usually temporary.
Preventing Future Matting
Once we get your dog comfortable, here's how to prevent matting from coming back:
| Coat Type | Brushing Frequency | Grooming Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Curly (Poodle, Doodle) | Every 1-2 days | Every 4-6 weeks |
| Long silky (Yorkie, Shih Tzu) | Every 2-3 days | Every 4-6 weeks |
| Double coat (Golden, Husky) | 2-3x per week | Every 6-8 weeks |
| Short coat (Lab, Beagle) | Weekly | Every 8-12 weeks |
Matting Hot Spots
These areas mat fastest — pay extra attention when brushing:
- Behind the ears
- Under the collar
- Armpits (where legs meet body)
- Behind the rear legs
- Belly (especially after lying down)
- Anywhere friction occurs
Breeds Prone to Matting
Some breeds are matting magnets. If you have one of these, regular grooming is essential:
- Doodles: Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Bernedoodles, Aussiedoodles
- Poodles: All sizes — toy, mini, standard
- Silky coats: Shih Tzus, Yorkies, Maltese, Lhasa Apsos
- Long coats: Cocker Spaniels, Cavaliers, Havanese
- Double coats: Goldens, Huskies, Collies, Shepherds (undercoat mats)
Matted Dog Grooming Pricing
Matted dogs take longer and require more skill, so pricing may be higher than a standard groom. We'll give you an honest estimate before we start, based on:
- Severity of matting
- Size of your dog
- Time required
- Whether we can brush out vs. shave
We don't charge by the mat or try to upsell you — we charge fairly for the time and skill required.
No Shame, Just Help
We've seen it all. Dogs who haven't been groomed in years. Dogs whose owners were hospitalized. Dogs from hoarding situations. Rescue dogs. Elderly owners' dogs. Pandemic puppies who never learned to be groomed.
Whatever the situation, we're not here to judge. We're here to help your dog feel better.
